Tradition is the Pattern of Life

Tradition is the Pattern of Life

A tradition involves information, a belief system, or custom that is modeled or handed down orally becoming a pattern which is continued by the next generation.  A pattern is a model, guide, or plan.  Traditions give definition to our history. They can be good or bad.  Some should be embraced.  Others should be erased.

Since tradition is something that has been done before, it brings insight with a frame of reference.  The Israelites of the Old Testament were masters at communicating their opinions, doctrines, and practices to future generations.  The invaluable lessons recorded in the Scriptures thousands of years ago are still relevant today.

 Jeremiah 6:16 (NIV)

“This is what the Lord says:  Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it and you will find rest for your souls.”

Practical Application and Assignments:

History gives us the advantage to view the whole picture and learn from the mistakes.  “Whatever is has already been, and what will be has been before and God will call the past into account.”  Ecclesiastes 3:15 (NIV)

  • Evaluate your traditions. Tradition can be anything from Grandma’s favorite recipe to the customary celebration of an event.  Perhaps it is a “Grandpa always said…” motto that has influenced the family’s lifestyle for generations.  What are the traditions you want passed down to your grandchildren?  Is the tradition beneficial?  Does it line up with the truth and values taught in the Word of God?  If not, discard it.
  • Share with your family the genealogy structure, life-long patterns, traditions, and stories of their ancestors giving them the opportunity to draw their own conclusions.
  • Begin new traditions of your own.

“What you have heard from me, keep as the pattern of sound teaching, with faith and love in Christ Jesus.”  II Timothy 1:13 (NIV)
