For centuries, the cross has been one of the greatest symbols of the Christian faith.  In modern times it is vogue to wear a crucifix.  They are available in rhinestones, precious metals, precious stones, and all kinds of wood.  But for many in our society instead of being a statement of faith, it has become a statement of fashion.  It’s really not vogue.  It’s just vague!  The point is that many people wear it without knowing what it means.  The symbol has subtly been redefined and its true meaning almost forgotten.         .

A bridge is a structure built over an obstacle or chasm to provide a passageway.  The cross: the emblem of the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ is the bridge of reconciliation that makes possible our fellowship with God.

Colossians 1:20

“Having made peace through the blood of His cross, by Him to reconcile all things to Himself.”

Practical Application and Assignments:

Jesus conquered the spirit of the world on the cross.  The cross changes a minus into a plus.  It is the bridge that turns the negative into a positive.  The cross:  the way of death, is the only way to life.

• Cross over the bridge.  On a tour to theHoly Land, I visited the place where Christ was crucified.  The bottom of the hill that held the cross had become an actual garbage dump.  Symbolically, the foot of the cross is where all mankind has been invited to bring the garbage of their lives and receive forgiveness.
• Read Matthew, chapters 26, 27.  These chapters give the historical account of the trial, suffering, and crucifixion of Christ.
• Take up your cross.  Being a cultural Christian, in name only, will cost you nothing.  Being a true disciple will cost you everything, but the dividends you reap are beyond calculation.

Jesus said, “If any man will come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily and follow Me.” Luke 9:23
