Temperance is the Self-Control of Life

Temperance is the Self-Control of Life

We live in a society of little or no restraints.  Its philosophy is, “If it feels good, do it.”  In diametric opposition, temperance is self-control.  It is an outward sign of a disciplined life which reveals the motive of the soul.  We can plan our actions, but our spontaneous, subconscious reactions expose who we really are.

Man’s basic passions are classified as love, hate, anger, fear, joy, and jealousy which can assert themselves in good or evil.  Temperance is self-control exhibited in our passions, desires, thoughts, appetites, actions, and reactions.  When we surrender our will to God, He produces temperance that will channel and discipline every area of our lives.

I Corinthians 9:25

“Be temperate in all things”.

Practical Application and Assignments:

A gentle rain is refreshing, but too much rain can cause a flood.  Temperance is knowing when enough is enough and exercising self- control.  It is the final fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5:23.  It announces to the world that God is at work in your life.

  • The first step towards self-control is to know yourself. Study your reactions and you will discover your true motives and character flaws.  Don’t allow someone else’s actions to control your reactions.  Face your weaknesses and assume responsibility for your actions.
  • Put on the brakes! Temperance is the red light.  Whether it is holding your tongue from retaliating to a derogatory remark, resisting a fit of rage, walking away from an addiction, or refusing excess spending…. self-control affects every arena in life.
  • Submit your will to the will of God. This requires a total surrender to the Lordship of Jesus Christ.  Invite the Holy Spirit into your life on a daily basis and He will empower you with strength to exercise temperance in all things.

“He that hath no rule over his own spirit is broken down and without walls.” Proverbs 25:28
