Maturity is the Report Card of Life

Maturity is the Report Card of Life

We enter into the world in the form of infancy.  There is “no way” a baby can provide for himself.  He only knows if he is satisfied or dissatisfied.  Childhood arrives with the stage of “my way.”  The next phase is the adolescent searching for “some way” to get what he wants for himself.  He rushes into manhood and parenthood thinking it is “our way.”  And finally, on to the maturity of knowing it is “God’s way.”  Maturity understands that life is not about “me.”  It takes us from fatherhood to mentoring.  It transfers us from personal advancement to kingdom advancement.

In our school system, children are given report cards that measure their growth.  Their progression of learning determines their grade level.  What is your grade level in the school of life?

II Peter 3:18

“But grow in grace and in the knowledge of our Lord…Jesus Christ.”

Practical Application and Assignments:

Maturity doesn’t happen overnight.  At first, a baby just lays there waiting for someone else to meet his needs.  One day, he learns to roll over and then to push himself up into a sitting position.  Finally, he can actually stand up.  When he first begins to walk, he will keep falling and trying again.  But one day, he will run!

  • Roll over!  Perhaps you have been walking for years, but you stumbled and fell.  If life has left you on your back in a position of despair, roll over!
  • Sit up!  “For He has made us to sit together in heavenly places in Christ Jesus.”  Read Ephesians 2:6.
  • Walk!  “…Walk in the Spirit.” Galatians 5:25 “Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly, nor standeth in the way of sinners… He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water…” Psalm 1:1-3  That is maturity!
  • Run!  “…Let us run with patience the race that is set before us.”  Hebrews 12:1

“Therefore, let us…go on to maturity.” Hebrews 6:1 (NIV)
