Grandparenting is the Second Chance of Life

Grandparenting is the Second Chance of Life

Someone said, “If I had known being a grandparent would be so much fun, I would have done that first.”  We all enter parenthood with the lofty goal of not making the same mistakes our parents made, only to discover that we make new mistakes of our very own.  Since children do not arrive with a “how-to” manual like a recipe in a cookbook, we basically learn by experience.  By the time the children are grown up, most parents have some regrets.

Grandparenting is like almost getting a second chance to do it right.  In spite of being separated from my grandparents geographically by nine hundred miles, they each profoundly influenced my life and left me with a Godly heritage.

Psalm 61:5

“For Thou, O God has heard my vows: Thou has given me the heritage of those that fear Thy name.”

Practical Application and Assignments:

Those grandparents who have the attitude, “I raised mine, it’s your turn” will miss one of the greatest opportunities ever afforded them.  To invest time and energy through a Godly example to your grandchildren is to invest in the future.

  • When I was seven years old, my dad was given a four year ministry assignment as a National Evangelist.  The adjustment to his absence at home was traumatic.  I will never forget an elderly couple in our church coming to our home, holding me, and saying, “We will be your grandparents when your dad is away.”  They helped fill that void and gave me a greater sense of security.  It changed my life.
  •  If your grandparents did not give you a Godly heritage, begin with your generation and leave one to the generation to come; including other children God places in your life who offer you another chance to make a difference.

The Apostle Paul said, “I have been reminded of your sincere faith which first lived in your grandmother, Lois, and in your mother, Eunice, and I am persuaded now lives in you also.”  II Timothy 1:5 (NIV)
