Fellowship is the Table of Life

Fellowship is the Table of Life

In our fast paced American culture we have replaced mealtime around the family table with fast food in route to the next activity, or with a TV dinner around the television in what used to be the family room.  No conversation, no interaction, no reflection, and no introspection.

The family meal should be a representation of Communion.  The table of the Lord is a place of grace; the place of fellowship with the Father; the place of safety in the presence of our enemies.  Psalm 23:5, “Thou will prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.”  The table is set.  The meal is ready.   The cuisine is out of this world.  The presentation is exquisite.  The fellowship is fantastic.

Revelation 3:20

“Behold I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear My voice, and will open the door, I will come in and eat with him and he with Me.”

Practical Application and Assignments:

Mealtime was always very special to me when I was growing up.   My mother made memories around the meal table and still does for her grandchildren.  Mom never saved her china for guests.  She enjoys creating elegant table settings and preparing meals with specific themes.  For example, she took us around the world with cuisines of different countries.  Sometimes we wore costumes for the occasion.  She created a festive atmosphere with music and decorations.  Whether it was a picnic in front the fireplace, a cowboy barbeque around a pretend campfire with a candle, or a “backyard” dinner at the beach by the kiddy pool, my mother taught us to use our imagination.

  • Be creative.  Celebrations at mealtime can turn holidays, special occasions, and even normal routine days into grand events of fellowship.
  • Place a Scripture at each plate.  Hold hands and pray together before every meal.  Discuss the events of the day.  Eat together.  Laugh together.  Cry together.  Fellowship with God and enjoy each other.

“We had sweet fellowship together…”  Psalm 55:14 (AMP)
