Fasting is the Self-denial of Life

Fasting is the Self-denial of Life

Why in the world would anyone want to fast? I am so glad you asked.  There are many benefits to fasting.  Believe it or not, a fast under a doctor’s supervision, using wisdom, and the right conditions is a very good way to rid your physical body of poisonous toxins.  Generally, fasting refers to refraining from eating solid foods and certain liquids, or giving up particular activities for a specific period of time.

Self-discipline is a “must” for success.  Fasting is self-denial that empowers and sensitizes your inner man.  It encourages self-discipline.  One of my favorite ways to fast is in between meals and snacks.  Just kidding!  Seriously, fasting increases our level of spiritual authority when it accompanies a life style of prayer and obedience to God’s Word.  It creates a season of consecration and intimacy with God.

Joel 1:14

“Sanctify a fast, call a solemn assembly… and cry unto the Lord.”

Practical Application and Assignments:

Fasting is a voluntary commitment of abstinence for the purpose of prayer and consecration. When Jesus spoke of fasting in Matthew, chapter 6, He used the word, “when” you fast, not “if” you fast, indicating that it is an expected practice.

  • Study the different types of fasting. A Daniel’s fast eliminates meats, breads and sweets from your diet. A solid food fast is abstinence from anything but water and juices. A total fast is drinking only water. An entertainment fast is giving up TV, radio, movies, etc., during the period of fasting.
  • Look up Scriptures that deal with fasting to gain insight into its importance and purpose. Sacrifice moves the heart of God and tests our level of commitment. Isaiah, chapter 58, asks “Is this not the fast that I have chosen?.. to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that you break every yoke?” Isaiah 58:6

“…So we fasted and prayed about these concerns and He listened.”  Ezra 8:23
