A covenant is a promise between two or more individuals. It is a legally binding contractual agreement which includes both the present and the future. The promise may be conditional, but once it becomes a signed legal contract of covenant, it is illegal for it to be violated without legal intervention.
A covenant demands faithfulness. God’s contracts do not require legality because it is impossible for Him to break covenant. His faithfulness guarantees His promise. What He says is so, and it is so because He said it. His contract is written and revealed in His Word. The conditions are previously stated and executed accordingly. Our covenant with God grants us access to all of His promises.
Psalm 25:14
“The secret of the Lord is with them that fear Him and He will show them His covenant.”
Practical Application and Assignments:
There was a time when a contract consisted of a handshake and a verbal agreement. Because of the lack of integrity in our society, it now requires a witnessed signature. To be successful, it is necessary to understand covenant.
- Read Genesis 9:1-17. After the flood, God set a rainbow between Himself and all of creation as a reminder and sign of His covenant that He would never again destroy the whole earth with a flood.
- Hang a crystal prism in your window. On sunny days enjoy the rainbows and remember God’s promises. We look up to see a rainbow, but when God looks at a rainbow He looks down through the cataract of color, sees all of us and remembers His covenant.
- Study God’s covenants in the Bible. Make a covenant with God and sign your name: “With Gods help, from this day forward I promise to…” God keeps His promises. Do you? “Keep the Words of this covenant that you may prosper in all that you do.” Deuteronomy 29:9
“Remember His covenant forever; the Word which He commanded, for a thousand generations.” I Chronicles 16:15
