Jesus told a story in Luke, chapter 6. Two men built a house each choosing different foundations. When the storm came, the house on the sand disintegrated. The house on the rock remained. The parable graphically illustrates the difference between wise and foolish choices.
Wisdom is the correct use of knowledge. It is more than acquired knowledge because intelligent, educated people, knowing there will be consequences, repeat the same unwise choices. Wisdom is the ability to see the reaping before the sowing and use discretion. It is a gift from God, given instantly by request only, on an as needed basis.
James 1:5
“If any man lack wisdom, let him ask of God who gives to all men liberally.”
Practical Application and Assignments:
God is the source of all wisdom. “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” Psalm 111:10 In this text, the Hebrew word for fear refers to respect. Respect for God recognizes His sovereign authority.
- Make wisdom your top priority. If you only have time for one prayer, ask for wisdom. Wisdom comes with uncommon health, wealth, favor, direction, protection, judgment, and discernment.
- Read a chapter in Proverbs once a day. It is God’s prescription for spiritual vitamins. The book of Proverbs contains thirty-one chapters, one for every day of the month. It is filled with wise counsel that relates to life on a daily basis. Typically, the people who lack wisdom are the same ones who don’t like anyone telling them what to do. “The way of a fool is right in his own eyes, but he who heeds counsel is wise.” Proverbs 12:15
“Behold, I have taught you statutes and judgments, even as the Lord my God commanded me… Keep therefore and do them; for this is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the nations…” Deuteronomy 4:5,6
