What is understanding? In Proverbs 16:22, understanding is described as a fountain of life to those who have it. When you understand something, you fully comprehend, perceive, and grasp its meaning until you know that “you know.” Do you remember being in your math class before the concept of solving the problem was explained? It was like a foreign language until the teacher unlocked the answer and suddenly, understanding began to flow like a fountain. What appeared difficult became easy when understood.
Where does understanding come from and how is it obtained? The following Scriptures answer the question: Psalm 119:4, “Through Thy precepts, I get understanding.” Proverbs 15:32, “He that heeds correction, gains understanding.” 1 John 5:20, “The Son of God has come and given understanding that we may know Him.”

Practical Application and Assignments:
You can’t understand the Bible, until you know the God of the Bible. Like darkness vanishing when light floods in, understanding springs up like a fountain replacing the questions with answers. Understanding unravels hidden spiritual truths and mysteries through Divine revelation knowledge.
- Read the teachings of Christ in the Gospels. Jesus often taught in parables using something natural or visible to explain that which is Supernatural or invisible.
- Ask God for understanding with a mind that is open to receive. Your sincerity will unlock the door to your heart. Proverbs 8:5 tells us that the gift of understanding is accessed by an understanding heart.
- Practice God’s Word. “Let thine heart retain My words: keep My commandments and live. Get wisdom, get understanding; forget it not; neither decline from the words of My mouth.” Proverbs 4:5
