Touch is the Sensitivity of Life

Touch is the Sensitivity of Life

Did you know that over one-third of our five million touch receptors are located in our hands?  Don’t underestimate the power of touch.  A recent study indicated that most people need to be touched by another person at least seven times a day to maintain a healthy self-image.  The warmth of a simple hug or handshake communicates and transmits a message of acceptance.

Zechariah 2:8 states, “…Whoever touches you, touches the apple of God’s eye.”  That is sensitivity!  Jesus was so sensitive that when a woman in the crowd surrounding Him touched the hem of His garment with her faith, He knew it!  He asked, “Who touched Me?”

Matthew 9:20,22

“And behold a woman, which was diseased with an issue of blood twelve years came behind Him and touched the hem of His garment  …and the woman was made whole from that hour.”

Practical Application and Assignments:

When you were born the instant you entered into the world your first experience was to be touched.  Your entire body is covered with sensors, feelers, and receptors that send information to your brain.  A simple touch activates a relaxation response that promotes emotional security.

  • Answer the following question: Are you sensitive or insensitive? Insensitivity usually indicates a need for inner healing.  A wound from the neglect of nurturing during childhood, or pain inflicted through abandonment or rejection can cause you to shut down inside.  Being sensitive to others opens your spirit.
  • Touch the heart of those you love. Reach out to someone who has been rejected and abandoned.  Become aware of the needs of others. Every time you hold hands, give a warm embrace, a comforting stroke, a gentle pat, you are saying,  “You are important to me.”
  • Touch the heart of God with your faith.

“…We have a High Priest, Jesus Christ, who has passed into the heavens.  For we do not have a High Priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities….” Hebrews 4:14, 15
