Serenity is the Tranquility of Life

Serenity is the Tranquility of Life

The story is told of a contest with a prize for the best painting depicting serenity.  Many beautiful pictures of quiet lakes and landscapes were submitted, but the painting awarded the prize was a picture of a thundering waterfall.  Upon closer scrutiny on a projecting ledge of rock behind the torrent water, a mother bird was calmly feeding her babies.

Serenity is sometimes visualized as a picture of a deserted beach where the only noise is the sounds of nature.  But serenity is more than that.  It is the place of an undisturbed state of mind.  It is the calm in the midst of the storm.  Serenity is the tranquility of an inner relaxed attitude, based on confidence and trust in God.

Isaiah 26:3

“Thou will keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on Thee.”

Practical Application and Assignments:

There are all kinds of ways to produce the ambiance of serenity.    For example, soft music, the scent of fresh cut flowers, the flickering glow of a candle, the sound of water tumbling in a fountain, the warmth of a fire in the fireplace can create a serene setting that will produce a peaceful feeling.

  • Change the atmosphere in your home.  Create a “haven” and sanctuary in the privacy of your own backyard.  Plant a butterfly garden.  Provide a “quiet place” for prayer and meditation.
  • Take advantage of the “photo opportunities” God places in your path every day.  Watch the sunrise or sunset.  Listen to the sounds of nature.  Enjoy the beautiful variegated colors displayed in each season outside your windows.
  • Close your eyes and pretend you are barefoot on the beach.  Let time stand still.  Feel the sunshine on your shoulder and the salted breeze on your face.  Watch the waves and listen as they splash on the shore.  Feel the sand between your toes.  Take a deep breath.  Acknowledge the Creator of such picturesque beauty and you will experience His presence and discover His tranquility.

“Be still and know that I am God.” Psalm 46:10
