Repentance is the Reformation of Life

Repentance is the Reformation of Life

Repentance produces reformation.  Reformation brings about corrective, positive improvement in behavior.  It demands a total transformation of the mind, will, and emotions.  True repentance is remorse that results in an “about-face” change of direction.  Jesus said, “Unless you repent, you will all likewise perish.” Luke 13:3

One day, the prodigal son was sitting in the pigpen of his reckless choices.  Regretfully, he remembered that life was so much better at his father’s house.  He swallowed his pride, made a decision to return home, repent, and ask for forgiveness. Luke 15:11-32  Perhaps you have been running from God.  Your heavenly Father is waiting for you to come home.

John 6:37  (Paraphrased)

Jesus said, “He that comes to me, I will never reject or cast out.”

Practical Application and Assignments:

The story of Jonah is a picture of repentance.  God gave him an assignment that could change the destiny of a city.  Jonah rebelled and fled on a ship in the opposite direction.  When his disobedience resulted in him being cast overboard, God sent a whale to the rescue.  Trapped in the belly of a whale, Jonah repented and was granted a second chance. He returned to Nineveh and the entire population of that pagan city turned to God in repentance.

  • Read Matthew 12:40,41.  Jesus compared the three days Jonah was in the belly of the whale with the three days of His burial.  His crucifixion and resurrection provided a second chance for all of humanity.
  • Think about it and answer the following questions: Are you running from God?  Have you been disobedient?   Do you need a second chance?  Jonah chose to repent and fulfill his purpose and destiny. What will you choose?

“Repent therefore, and be converted, that your sins may be blotted out, when the times are refreshing shall come from the presence of the Lord.” Acts 3:19
