Praise is the Purpose of Life

Praise is the Purpose of Life

The Westminster Catechism states that the chief purpose of man is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever.  Did you know that you were created to praise the Lord?  There are two times to praise the Lord: when you feel like it and when you don’t.  In other words, Kind David said, “From the rising of the sun until it’s going down, the name of the Lord shall be praised.” Psalm 113:3

David praised the Lord in the good times and in the bad times.  He hid in a cave of obscurity while being pursued by King Saul who attempted to kill him twenty-one times.  Perhaps in the darkness he penned these words: “The Lord is my Light, whom shall I fear?”  Psalm 27:1.  “The Lord is my rock, my fortress, my deliverer.” Psalm 18:2  He looked at his sword and said, “The Lord is my defense.” Psalm 94:22

Psalm 34:1

“I will bless the Lord at all times.”

Practical Application and Assignments:

David was referred to as a man after God’s own heart because he knew how to repent.  He learned to praise and give thanks when he was a child.  His life held so many stories of deliverance that praising God became a lifestyle.  He understood his purpose.

  • Make praise a normal part of your routine.  The shower is a great place to sing.  A morning walk or drive to work is a wonderful opportunity to be alone with God.  Keep an attitude of praise in your heart and you will begin to wear it as a garment.  The Bible says, “Praise looks good on the upright.” Psalm 33:1
  • Include a Psalm in your daily devotions.  Read it out loud.  Make it personal.  The Lord is my transportation.  The Lord is my healer.  The Lord is my song.  The Lord is my shepherd.  The Lord is my strength.  The Lord is my shield.  The Lord is my helper.  The Lord is my provider. The Lord is my refuge.  The Lord is my peace.  The Lord is my joy.  The Lord is my friend.  The Lord is “my”…

“Let everything that hath breath praise the Lord.  Praise ye the Lord.” Psalm 150:6
