The word abomination is used to describe a corrupt, immoral, sinful act, or deed. Idolatry is a sin that is directed at God, Himself. It is an abomination that takes wickedness to its lowest level. Its disrespect is an attempt to dethrone God from His own universe. Throughout the ages in search for God, people groups have built idols because inside every person is a longing to worship something. Because most of our idols are not carved out of stone, we think we are not guilty of breaking the First and Second Commandments.
In the U.S.A., this narcissistic generation has recklessly shaken its finger in the face of God by legally removing Him from its schools. Someone asked Ruth Graham, “Where is our God?” She replied, “We told Him to get out of our lives. Maybe He just stepped out.” Any time you leave no room for God, whoever or whatever is taking His place is an idol. Whatever you worship, inevitably you will become.
“Thou shalt have no other gods before Me! Thou shalt not worship any graven image!”
Practical Application and Assignments:
“The heart is deceitful above all things… I, the Lord search the heart, even to give every man according to his ways.” Jeremiah 17:9,10
- Search your heart. Have you unknowingly set up idols in your life? Check your possessions in your home. Discard anything that does not bring glory to God. “Shun any sort of idolatry (of loving and venerating anything more than God).” I Corinthians 10:14 (AMP)
- Read II Timothy 3:1-5. “In the last days, men will be lovers of self… lovers of pleasure more than lovers of God.” In contrast, God knew you first. He knows you best and He loves you most. He deserves first place status.
“…Keep yourselves from idols…(from anything and everything that would occupy the place in your heart due to God, from any substitute for Him that should take first place in your life).” I John 5:21 (AMP)
