Hypocrisy is the Counterfeit of Life

Hypocrisy is the Counterfeit of Life

On Halloween people wear all kinds of masks to disguise their identity.  Hypocrisy is similar to wearing a mask.  It is masquerading being pious without being virtuous.  A hypocrite is one who appears to be authentic, when in reality, only playing a role.  A counterfeit is a false copy resembling the genuine.

Hypocrisy probably ranks close to first place of the top ten arguments given for not attending church.  Most people can handle imperfection, but when it is covered up in a superficial attempt to appear righteous, they become disillusioned.  Hypocrisy means to “act” different.  Holiness means to “be” different.  Holiness is allowing the “doing” to flow out of the “being.”  Have you been wearing a mask that you are brave enough to disclose in order to receive deliverance and healing?  The original makes the best copy!

Luke 12:2 (MSG)

“You cannot hide behind a religious mask forever, sooner or later the mask will slip and your true face will be known”

Practical Application and Assignments:

Everyone is guilty of wearing masks at times.  For example, we mask our hurt with indifference.  We mask our loneliness with busyness.  We mask our depression with giddiness.  We mask our fear with anger.  We mask our insecurity with arrogance.  We mask our sin with piety…

  • Think about it: What are the masks you wear? It is time to remove the closet, rather than “coming out of the closet.” It is time to stop making excuses for duplicitous behavior.
  • Get real! Remove the disguise. Just as masking tape cannot repair a broken glass, masking our brokenness cannot restore our spirit. Disclosure of sin issues through repentance brings renewal and covering. Concealing them for the purpose of deception will eventually bring exposure and disgrace.

“We refuse to wear masks and play games. We don’t maneuver and manipulate behind the scenes, rather we keep everything we do and say out in the open, the whole truth on display…” II Corinthians 4:2 (MSG)
