The first book of the Bible contains the front page news of the first murder ever committed. Today our world is so saturated with hate that this generation can hardly turn on a news channel without hearing about a hate crime. It would be appalling to know how many murders are witnessed in our own living rooms via television. When hatred invades the heart, it produces rage that can escalate into devastating acts of violence.
Hatred is vicious; it consumes and devours its victims. Consequently, the perpetrator of hatred becomes as much a victim as those on whom it is unleashed. While love has the power to give life, hatred has the power to take life. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. said, “I have decided to stick with love. Hate is too big a burden to carry.”
Matthew 5:44,
Jesus said, “Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them that despitefully use you.”
Practical Application and Assignments:
We live in dangerous world. Hate produces an unsafe environment. Love is the only weapon that conquers hate. Hatred disintegrates in the presence of love.
- Observe the devastation of a hurricane or tornado. The fury of hatred leaves the same kind of disaster. It destroys everything in its path.
- If there is someone to whom you have either wished or purposely inflicted harm, you have been guilty of hatred. Hatred reveals itself through rage, jealousy, resentment, and prejudice. Don’t ignore any of these vicious characteristics. Don’t give them a place in your heart. Hate leaves no room for goodness.
- If you have been a victim of someone’s hatred, follow Christ’s instructions: “Love them anyway. Bless them. Do good to them and pray for them.” So how is such a difficult assignment accomplished? The answer is only four words: “Love is a decision.”
“Overcome evil with good.” Romans 12:21
