Gentleness is the Tenderness of Life

Gentleness is the Tenderness of Life

Gentleness is a polite, gracious, considerate act of kindness that is born out of compassion.  It is a language that doesn’t need a vocabulary.  It is spoken with a touch and expressed by a kind deed.  It is the gift everyone can afford and requires the least self-sacrifice.

In this high-tech, stress-filled age of iphones and text messaging we have almost lost the art of gentle communication.  How can man discover how to bounce signals off planets, receive pictures from satellites, and yet have difficulty communicating tenderness?  Guard yourself that you do not allow the stress, pressures, and pain in life to rob you of your gentleness.  Titus 3:2 admonishes us to “be gentle.”

Philippians 4:5 (NKJV)

“Let your gentleness be known to all men.”

Practical Application and Assignments:

Gentleness is a quality that is cultivated by taking time for tenderness. Harshness alienates.  Gentleness generates acceptance.

  • Show kindness.  Go out of your way to deliberately extend kindness to someone who seems to dislike you and from whom you expect nothing in return.
  • Show appreciation.  Compliment at least five people that you would not ordinarily even notice, like the beautiful smile of a checkout girl at the grocery store or the efficiency of the waiter in the restaurant.
  • Show concern.  Give a hug and hope to someone in a nursing home. Prepare food for someone who is sick and incapacitated.  Take flowers to someone in the hospital.  Send a card or letter to someone needing encouragement.  Invite someone who is lonely over for coffee.  Care for a child whose mother is in need of a break…
  • Show compassion.  Notice when someone is hurting.  Sometimes we have to read between the lines.  Most people attempt to disguise their pain, but their eyes reveal what their body language is concealing.  Listen with your heart.  Reach out with a prayer and a gentle touch.

“A gentle tongue (with its healing power) is a tree of life, but willful contrariness in it breaks down the spirit.” Proverbs 15:4 (AMP)
