The Fear of the Lord is the Beginning of Life

The Fear of the Lord is the Beginning of Life

King Solomon, who was considered the wisest man of his day penned these words in Ecclesiastes 12:13-14: “Now all has been heard. Here is the conclusion of the matter.  Fear God and keep His commandments for this is the whole duty of man.”  To fear the Lord is to show Him proper respect by reverencing His Word.  The more time you spend in His Word and His presence, the more you will desire to please Him and obey His precepts.

Hear the Word of the Lord: Psalm 111:10 says, “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” Deuteronomy 31:12,13 admonishes, “Learn to fear the Lord our God and observe to do all the words of His law.”   Proverbs 8:13 declares, “To fear the Lord is to hate evil.” Proverbs 14:16 states, “A wise man fears and departs from evil.”

Proverbs 19:23

“The fear of the Lord leads to life.”

Practical Application and Assignments:

The fear of the Lord is an awe of God and respect for His rules.   God-given fear causes us to recognize the difference between being fearful and using discretion in the actual presence of danger.

Consider the difference between unhealthy and healthy fear:

Unhealthy fear paralyzes us…….Healthy fear protects us.

Unhealthy fear threatens us…….Healthy fear warns us.

Unhealthy fear discourages us….Healthy fear delivers us.

Unhealthy fear entraps us………Healthy fear improves us.

Think about it: All of us long for adventure. For example, do you remember the first time you rode a bike, a horse, or even a roller coaster? Scary, and yet exciting!  The fear of the Lord is a healthy fear.  It takes the toddler from finally taking that first step, to learning to use wisdom that keeps him from stepping in front of a speeding automobile.  Real life begins with the fear of the Lord and takes us on an exciting journey through life.

“Behold, thus shall the man be blessed who reverently and worshipfully fears the Lord.” Psalm 128:4 (AMP)
