Doubt is the Skepticism of Life

Doubt is the Skepticism of Life

The Bible records the reaction of the disciples to the news of Christ’s resurrection in John 20:19-29.  Thomas was filled with disbelief and even stated that he would only believe when he saw the nail scars in His hands.  The moment Christ entered the room instead of reprimanding Thomas for his doubt, He stretched out His hands.  Thomas exclaimed, “My Lord and my God!”

Doubt and skepticism cannot stand in His presence.  In times of doubt, turn your eyes upon Jesus.  Your faith will rush in like a fountain and wash away the unbelief.  The Bible explains, “…To every man God has dealt the measure of faith.” Romans 12:3  We were not born with doubt.  We learn to doubt.

John 20:29

“Blessed are they that have not seen and yet have believed.”

Practical Application and Assignments:

Because there is so little integrity in today’s world, we have learned to second-guess the legitimacy of almost everything and everybody.

I am not suggesting that we should be gullible with that which is not trustworthy.  But on the other hand, skepticism can cause us to become calloused and cynical, and as cold and hard as steel.

  • If you have become so disillusioned and skeptical that you can no longer trust anyone, ask God for discernment.  Don’t allow people who are not trustworthy to cause you to doubt God’s faithfulness.
  • Repent of any doubt that is associated with the sin of unbelief.  When reason challenges and attacks faith for the purpose of birthing doubt, reason is wrong.  Command doubt to leave in the name of Jesus!
  • Conquer doubt with faith.  Jesus said, “Have faith in God  for… whosoever shall say unto this mountain, be thou removed, and be cast into the sea; and shall not doubt, in his heart, but shall believe that those things which he saith shall come to pass; he shall have whatsoever he saith.” Mark 11:22,23
  • “Pray, believe and receive.  Pray doubt and do without.”

“…Lord, I believe.  Help thou mine unbelief.” Mark 9:24
