A Smile is the Happy Face of Life

A Smile is the Happy Face of Life

One of the first things children learn to draw is a happy face.  They receive happy face stickers as rewards for accomplishments.  A smile is an indication of approval, acceptance, and joy.  Smiles are free, so be generous with them.  They are contagious.  Almost every time you give a smile, you will receive one in return.

A frown indicates disapproval, worry, weariness, pain, or sadness.  Sometimes life becomes so difficult we forget to smile.  It takes seventy-two muscles to frown, but only fourteen to smile.  Smile and give your face a rest.  It is an instant face-lift.  Find someone who needs a smile today.  Smile at yourself in the mirror.

Psalm 119:135 (MSG)

“Smile on me, your servant, God; teach me the right way to live.”

Practical Application and Assignments:

A little girl observing a grumpy old man on the street corner asked, “Hey mister, aren’t you happy?”  “Sure I am” the old man grumbled.  She replied, “Then you better tell your face.  I don’t think it knows it.”  There are times when the monotony of life becomes so daily that we have to deliberately remind ourselves to smile.

  • Wear a smile. Smile in spite of your circumstances.  It will lift your spirit.  Jesus said, “Blessed are you, when men shall revile you and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.  Rejoice, and be exceedingly glad; for great is your reward in heaven.” Matthew 5:11,12
  • Look for reasons to smile. What are some of the things that automatically bring a smile to your face?   Recall funny jokes, cute statements of children, and happy memories.
  • Put on your happy face. Are you ready?  On the count of three: “One, two, three!…”  “A merry heart maketh a cheerful countenance; but by the sorrow of the heart the spirit is broken.”   Proverbs 15:13

“Then I commended mirth, because a man hath no better thing under the sun, than to eat, and to drink, and be merry:” Ecclesiastes 8:15
