“Where Are The Nazarites?”

 

ICEBREAKER: Name an actor or an actress or even a family member that is always changing their hair cut, hairstyle or hair color?

 

DEFINITION: Nazarite: the name of such Israelites as took on them the vow prescribed in the Bible. The word denotes generally one who is separated from others and consecrated to God. Although there is no mention of any Nazarite before Samson, yet it is evident that they existed before the time of Moses. The vow of a Nazarite involved these three things, (1) abstinence from wine and strong drink, (2) refraining from cutting the hair off the head during the whole period of the continuance of the vow, and (3) the avoidance of contact with the dead.

STUDY GROUP QUESTIONS:

1.    The Bible mentions only three individuals that took the Nazarite vows for life. Look up these three passages to find out who they were: Judges 13:4,5; 1Sa 1:11; Luk 1:15.

2.    Acts 18:18 and Acts 21:23-26 records that the Apostle Paul took a Nazarite vow for period of time. This was an act of consecration unto the Lord. What one thing do you think the Lord might ask you to give him as an offering? What would be the hardest thing for you to give up?

3.    Read Isaiah 58 as a group. Why does it seem that God was not so impressed with Israel’s vow to fast before him? (Hint: Isaiah 58;3,4)

4.    According to Isaiah 58:5-7 name one of the benefits of fasting?
